SUMMARY:Marion Bridge - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We regret to announce that all remaining Marion Bridge shows in our summer series here at Strathspey have been cancelled due to low ticket sales. \n\nA Strathspey and Boardmore Theatre Production\nA SUMMER SERIES: July 17\, 24\, 31 and August 14 \n“A compelling and strikingly original theatrical text … It might be MacIvor’s finest work yet.” — Daily News \nMarion Bridge will bring story-telling to an all new level as this theatrical production compliments and delivers with perfection the fantastic works and writing of Daniel MacIvor.   Marion Bridge is set in the kitchen of a family in Nova Scotia.  All three sisters finally make the long-delayed trip to Marion Bridge – which has been for their mother a family goal\, but when realized in the past has disappointed her daughters. \n“An intimate\, swiftly moving family drama … a sparkling crisp script\, beautifully structured\, with snappy\, funny lines that dart in and out quickly like swallows\, not interrupting the emotional drama of the story.”\n— Halifax Chronicle-Herald \nThree women in their thirties come “home” to the East Coast to be with their dying mother. Each in their own way tries to deal with the painful loneliness brought about by the lives they have chosen for themselves. The three women are a curious\, troubled bunch. Agnes\, whose hand is rarely without a drink\, fled their rural Canadian home to make her way as an actor in Toronto; she’s brought her personal theatrics with her on this trip home. Theresa is a nun who farms with her convent; a sliver of doubt has entered her life. And then there’s Louise\, who has all but retreated from adult life in favour of disappearing into the world of soap operas and serials. \n\n  \nWritten by Daniel MacIvor / Directed by Todd Hiscock \nStarring: Lindsay Thompson as Agnes / Bonnie MacLeod as Theresa / Jenna Lahey as Louise \n“This moving drama\, which tiptoes toward sentimentality without ever reaching it\, is the most surprising play that [MacIvor’s] ever written. When was the last time you saw a drama about three distinct\, complex women that had nothing to do with their relationships with men?”\n— New York Times \n

SUMMARY:Return of the Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler
DESCRIPTION:“It is 1972 and the beloved Scottish fiddle music of Cape Breton is fading away. A television film called The Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler ignites a controversy among the local people who eventually bring the music back and… to world class status.\nThe whole fascinating story is told with video and live entertainment by the man who did the first… and the latest documentary which is called: ‘The Return of the Vanishing Cape Breton Fiddler.'” \n \nJoin us at Strathspey Performing Arts Centre on Friday\, June 30! SUMMARY:Strathspey Notes: Rachel Davis\, Iain MacQuarrie and Buddy MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Strathspey Performing Arts Centre is proud to debut its’ first ever Classic Concert Series\, also known as “Strathspey Notes”.  Strathspey Notes is a Strathspey Production involving a series of 6 concerts – 3 will take place in Spring and 3 will take place in Fall.  Expect to hear a variety of musical combinations from Jazz & Blues to original folky compositions to good old-time Scottish music.  There will be songs\, tunes\, dance\, and instrumental pieces that you’ve not ever before heard the like of!\n\n \nHighly renowned Cape Breton Island singer-songwriter Buddy MacDonald will brilliantly host all concerts\, sharing his unique entertainment talents as gracious Master of Ceremonies but also as a performer you will not want to miss. Buddy will be joined on May 6th by Rachel Davis and Iain MacQuarrie\, and special guest Mac Morin on piano.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrongly influenced by the playing of her grandfather\, Clarence Long\, Baddeck native Rachel Davis has been a student of the fiddle since she was twelve. She fondly recalls sitting in a corner of her grandfather’s barber shop\, squeaking away at tunes under his careful guidance. Those first efforts lead to more teachers (including Karen Beaton\, Kyle MacNeil and Stan Chapman) and great progress\, as she has developed into a dynamic player with great timing and a great lift to her music. Along with her solo work\, Rachel is also in demand to share the stage with people such as singer-songwriters Buddy MacDonald\, Carmel Mikol and Donnie Campbell\, and has made guest appearances with groups such as The Cottars. Her latest collaboration is with the new Cape Breton powerhouse ensemble Còig\, who released their debut album in 2014. \n\n\n\nIain MacQuarrie hails from music on both sides of his family. This 12 year old up and coming dancer from West Mabou\, Cape Breton Island\, will keep you smiling and clapping – taught by his mother Cheryl MacDonald (MacQuarrie)\, Iain has the old style of dancing\, nice and close to floor and true to the Gaelic tradition. \n\nMac Morin is a dancer and piano player from Troy\, Cape Breton. Starting out as a talented dancer\, Mac became interested in piano as a teenager. He has gone on to tour around the world with Natalie MacMaster and Beòlach while continuing to travel widely to teach Cape Breton step dancing. Mac has appeared on numerous artists’ recordings including Natalie MacMaster\, Yo Yo Ma\, The Rankins\, Buddy MacMaster\, Troy MacGillivray and released his own solo album in 2003. \n\n\n\n\nPatrons to Strathspey Performing Arts Centre can also enjoy an opportunity involving Package Pricing where you will purchase tickets for all 3 concerts in Spring or Fall at a reduced package price. \n\n\nTicket prices are as follows:\nIndividual Concert Date Prices – \nAdult Regular  $30\nAdult Day of  $35\nYouth Regular  $15\nYouth Day of  $20\nMember Regular  $24\nMember Day of  $29\nPackage Series Prices –\n\n\nWith the purchase of 3 / 6  shows:\n\n\nAdult Regular  $80 / $155\nYouth Regular  $40 / $75\nMember Regular  $65 / $125

SUMMARY:John McDermott
DESCRIPTION:The legendary Scottish Canadian balladeer is coming to Strathspey Performing Arts Centre on November 3 at 7:30 p.m. \nJohn McDermott’s smooth\, sweet singing has propelled him to international stardom. With more than 25 albums to his credit\, he entertains audiences with a dynamite repertoire of heartfelt songs like The Band Played Waltzing Matilda\, Sonny’s Dream\, The Mull of Kintyre\, Caledonia\, The Parting Glass and Song for the Mira. \nJohn McDermott got his start in music in an unusual way. recorded an album of Irish and Scottish ballads as a nice 50th wedding anniversary gift for his parents. He recorded 12 tracks\, one for each of the 12 McDermott children\, and then added one more version of Danny Boy the way his father liked to hear it sung – a cappella. \nThose who heard the album encouraged John to have it produced commercially. Recalling that a couple of entertainment business heavyweights\, Michael Cohl and Bill Ballard\, had been impressed with his singing at a Karaoke Night during the Toronto Floating Film Festival a couple of years earlier\, John took the album to Ballard\, who put him in touch with the president of EMI Music Canada. \nEMI released 2\,000 copies on November 10\, 1992. The next day being Remembrance Day\, famed Canadian broadcaster Peter Gzowski played three tracks from the album – And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda\, Danny Boy and Christmas in the Trenches. The stores couldn’t keep it on the shelves and more copies were quickly produced. A few months later\, Paul McGrath\, a CBC-TV documentary maker who had also attended St. Michael’s Choir School\, profiled John in a short piece that Peter Mansbridge aired on his prime time nightly newscast The National. Within a short time the album had sold more than 50\,000 copies. \nJohn McDermott will be performing at Strathspey Performing Arts Centre in Mabou on November 3. Tickets are $50 in advance\, $55 day of show. Members of the Strathspey Performing Arts Centre Association are entitled to a 20 percent discount on advance tickets.

SUMMARY:Celtic Colours: Dangerous Duos
DESCRIPTION:Celtic Colours Event: \nWhat happens when you take two musicians who don’t usually play together and pair them up on stage? And you get to be the proverbial fly on the wall as the sparks fly on stage. With the diverse repertoire of Liz Carroll and Troy MacGillivray\, Daniel Lapp and Liz Doherty’s long musical history\, the rich legacy of song shared by Archie Fisher and Cyril MacPhee\, and the all-out musicianship of Tony McManus and Darren McMullin\, one can only imagine what these duos will come up with!
